4 Things To Do in Saranda, Albania

Saranda is considered as the unofficial capital of the Albanian Riviera, a city plenty of things to see and do, especially in summertime when it gives its best. From the plebby beaches near the town to the vibrant nightlife, from the ancient archaeological sites to natural treasures, Saranda is a top choice destination that every traveler should include in his itinerary and will not disappoint you. Here you can read the list of the best things to see and do in this lively and beautiful coastal town.

Enjoy the Clear Waters of Ksamil

South of Saranda, there is Ksamil, one of the best beach destinations in Albania. Ksamil is also called “the Ionian pearl” because of its beauty. It is located in a dramatic setting, a bay with three small islands reachable by swim or a boat ride and surrounded by turquoise waters. We suggest that you avoid Ksamil in August, because it is very crowded.

Walk through the Ancient Ruins of Butrint

This UNESCO World Heritage Site, the first to be listed in Albania, was inhabited and built by the ancient Greeks and Romans over centuries only to be left in abandoned in the Middle Ages.

Set in a beautiful forested area that sprawls across the peninsula, the ruins are very well preserved, though the amphitheatre, basilica and castle are the most impressive sights. The spectacular floor mosaics found at the baptistery are unfortunately covered year-round as part of the park’s conservation measures, but they are due to be unveiled for a short period again in 2021.

Until then, don’t miss the information panels which show its intricate design and how the complex has changed with each new ruler – it’s quite incredible.

Swim in the Icy Cold Waters of Syri-i-Kalter AKA The 'Blue Eye'

Set in a lush tangle of jungle, Albania’s Blue Eye is one of the most popular destinations for day-trippers from Saranda, and while it’s a beautiful place to visit, I’ll add one very important caveat – don’t bother going in the peak summer period unless you plan to arrive super early or late.

As the source of the Bistrica River, where bone-chillingly cold water bubbles up from a depth of more than 50 m amidst the trees, it certainly has the potential to be a wonderfully peaceful oasis, a perfect place to relax and cool off from the blistering sun. But as the pools are quite small and the parking lot perhaps far larger than it ought to be, the area unfortunately gets disgustingly crowded in July and August.

Outside of peak season, you’re likely to have a much more enjoyable experience.

Wander the Ottoman-Era Old Town of Gjiokaster

Without fail, Gjirokaster creates a striking first impression among newcomers.

Hurtling through the sweeping plains of the Drino Valley, the ancient Ottoman city appears suddenly and unexpectedly, clattering up the steep slopes of the Gjerë Mountains high above the patchwork of verdant farmlands that paint this corner of Albania a vibrant, hazy green.

Standing guard across the valley, the imposing Gjirokastra Fortress dominates the skyline amidst a sea of slate grey rooftops that hide a veritable labyrinth of cobbled alleyways and hidden staircases simply made for wandering. A place to put away the map and get well and truly lost.

Lying just an hour away from Saranda, this enchanting UNESCO-listed old town – one of Albania’s most beautiful in my mind – makes an easy day trip, but if you’ve got the time, it’s definitely worth spending a night or two here to really explore.
