Netflix Review: Is 'The Stranger' worth your time?

The Stranger is a British mystery thriller miniseries based on a novel by Harlan Coben of the same name. It premiered on Netflix on 30 January 2020. Starring Richard Armitage, Siobhan Finneran, and Jennifer Saunders among others.

The show is about a young woman played by Hannah John-Kamen (Killjoys, Game of Thrones) who is on a mission to expose people's secrets to their loved ones.

One of her first victims is Adam Price, a family man, and father of two boys who confronts his wife with the explosive secret.

This has unexpected consequences as his world falls apart but not for reasons you might imagine.

The domino effect of the first expose leads to the several lives getting entangled and eventually destroyed in the terrible web being woven by the lies and deceit.

There is a parallel track with teenagers who organise a 'silent rave' and it ends up with one of them being badly hurt and found butt-naked in the forest. There is also the mystery of a decapitated ilama and how the head came to be in the possession of one of the kids.

The series is fast-paced and adequately gripping. In does lag in the middle and when you are lulled by that lag, the series suddenly throws you a curveball to shake you up.

There are also times you feel like you have figured out the end but the series changes track and you have to work to keep pace with all the developments.

The cast acts well although at times Adam Price's attractiveness can be distracting. Jennifer Saunders is delightful in whatever screentime she gets.

So is the Stranger worth your time? It is immensely binge-able and while it's no Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad, you are unlikely to regret putting this on your list.
