BD2,000 fine for violating quarantine

A BUSINESSMAN has been fined BD2,000 for violating the self-quarantine rule imposed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, writes Noor Zahra.

The Bahraini appeared at the Lower Criminal Court where he denied breaking the rule following a complaint filed by the Health Ministry’s public health directorate.

However, he was fined when he appeared for his first hearing yesterday along with his lawyer.

His lawyer told the GDN that the defendant had returned from Singapore following a business trip.

However, she claimed that he was only advised to stay home and that her client was not told it was mandatory. “He did not have any symptoms and Singapore does not have many cases of coronavirus,” she told the GDN outside the courtroom.

The GDN reported on Friday that three people – a doctor, a lawyer and a businessman – were being investigated after they allegedly broke the 14-day self-quarantine rule. It added that any person found breaking the rule, whether at home or at a medical institution, will face legal action.
