‘Consult Civil Defence before disinfection’

PEOPLE have been instructed not to conduct any disinfection operations within their communities without the approval of Civil Defence, writes the GDN's Mohammed Al A'Ali.

Southern Municipality director general Assem Abdullatif urged Southern Municipal Council members yesterday during their meeting to consult with the Civil Defence before undertaking any cleaning operations.

He pointed out that there were various types of disinfectants for different kinds of material or surfaces and this required specialised handling.

The caution came amidst reports of volunteers undertaking disinfecting operations in their neighbourhoods as part of efforts to combat the spread of the Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19).

“Any disinfection procedures need to be done through Civil Defence permission, authorisation, and knowledge or monitoring,” said Mr Abdullatif.

“There are special disinfectants for walls, shop windows, streets, furniture and other material and all require specialised handling, care and control.

“Hazardous materials need to be handled carefully because they could harm the person spraying them or others.”

The GDN reported last week that cleaning companies have started disinfection operations across Bahrain after completing training by the Civil Defence.

Civil Defence director general said the department conducted 44 training courses for 332 individuals from cleaning and private companies.

The directorate had also issued 33 certificates for those licensed companies and their names will be listed on the Health Ministry web page dedicated to Covid-19.

Meanwhile, southern councillors have not been able to hold their weekly meeting remotely due to a legal technicality.

They met yesterday at the Southern Municipality in West Riffa because a move to hold the meeting through video conferencing was ruled illegal because general meetings should be held public.

However, councillors and other officials attending the meeting have to observe social distancing rules and limit the meeting to a maximum of two hours.

Daily committee meetings will continue through video conferencing.
