The Snow-Covered Salzburg

Salzburg is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.  I enjoy visiting it because it has it all – historical attractions, natural loveliness, fine restaurants, extensive transport network, and much more.  I mostly visit the city during the summer, leading tourist trips.

I was fortunate to visit it during March 2018.  When I boarded that flight, I hoped that my wish would be fulfilled.  I wanted to see Salzburg covered with snow.  I didn’t check the weather forecast.  I just wanted to experience it when it happened.

We stayed at Achat Plaza Zum Hirschen Hotel.  Its location was superb.  Shops, restaurants surrounded us, and the central train station was a few minutes’ walk.  As for the old town, we could walk to it in under 30 minutes.  And what a walk!

We could either walk and have the Salzach River on our right side or go through parts of the town passing by the legendary Mirabell Palace and its gardens.

When we arrived, there was no snow.  It only rained.  On the second day, it was cloudy without rain.  I began to lose hope that I’ll see Salzburg covered with snow.  We finished our daily program and arrived around 21:00.  I thought this is it.  It’s not meant to be this time.  I will have to wait.  I changed to get ready to sleep.  But wait.  It started snowing, but very little.  I thought, yes, not time.  Perhaps, I should come in January.

I slept and woke up to a delightful surprise.  When I peeked from my window, the street was entirely covered with snow.  I was so happy to see that.  I had a sparkle in my eyes and a big smile on my face; because of what is yet to come.  I promised the tourists of an optional program to visit Salzburg Castle.  So, we were in for a special treat, walking through the attractions of Salzburg and see them covered with snow.  It was phenomenal.  We took so many pictures that day.  It was like a fairy tale.

When we arrived at the ticket booth at Salzburg Castle, I took a look at my group.  They were full of joy and jubilation.  I thought to myself, wait the best is yet to come.  They did not realize that they will soon see one of the most beautiful views of their lives.  The castle sits on a hill at the height of 506 meters.  It offers 360° panoramic views of Salzburg.  To go to the top, you need to ride a funicular cart.  I knew what was coming; they didn’t.  We eagerly waited for our turn to come.  I told them, try to be on the lower side of the cart.  Stand next to the window.  And have your phone's cameras ready!

As we ascended, the views get better and better.  On 20 March 2018, I fulfilled my wish to see Salzburg covered with snow.  And it should be on your list now!
