Schools shelter plan for expats

GOVERNMENT schools could be used to shelter expatriate workers to relieve congestion in labour camps as part of national efforts to combat the spread of the Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19), the GDN reported today.

A special team will be set up to conduct field visits to government schools to determine their eligibility to be turned into temporary shelters.

The team will also inspect labour accommodations in co-ordination with the employers to work towards reducing overcrowding and in preparation to relocate the labourers.

Details were revealed yesterday during a video conference meeting led by Northern Governor Ali Al Asfoor along with the security committee and co-ordination council under the governorate.

Mr Al Asfoor praised the high level of awareness in society and the solidarity of citizens helping national efforts to contain the Covid-19 spread.

He said labourers who were currently not contracted for specific construction projects will be relocated and provided with their basic needs within the shelter while taking into account measures to ensure social distancing following disinfection.

Meanwhile, Southern Governor Shaikh Khalifa bin Ali Al Khalifa chaired a security meeting to discuss ways to reduce overcrowding of labourers in residential areas and use educational and social premises to house expatriate workers.

Measures taken by the Civil Defence to disinfect facilities were also reviewed.

The virtual meeting was attended by senior security officers and officials.

Shaikh Khalifa directed follow-up on awareness and preventive measures at various public facilities in the governorate.

He commended the role of security servicemen in promoting precautionary measures, stressing the need to intensify foot patrols to educate citizens and residents.
