Running with / without a mask

The rapid spike in the coronavirus cases worldwide has made us even more conscious about our health.
People around the globe are taking every necessary precaution to keep themselves safe from getting infected from the new strain of the virus or passing it on to others.
While it is being promoted to practise social distancing and maintaining good hygiene; wearing a face mask has been made compulsory in almost every public place.
Even if a face mask causes you discomfort, you know you cannot take it off. But what if it lands you in a hospital? That's what happened with a jogger after running wearing a face mask.
A 26-year-old man from China's Wuhan city ended up in a hospital after he went for a jog while wearing one.
A local newspaper report states that even though the man was having difficulty in breathing, he ignored the signs and kept on jogging.
To make up for the loss of two months of lockdown, he pushed himself really hard to cover a distance of 6km instead of his regular 3km.
After reaching home, he complained of chest pains and was immediately rushed to hospital. On examination, the doctors revealed that the man's lungs had collapsed due to performing such an intense workout while wearing a face mask.
In Bahrain, officially you do NOT have to wear a mask when out running.

  • Why you should not work out wearing a facemask

Never work out wearing a facemask, even if you are doing it for your own 'safety'. When you are exercising outdoors, you don't need to wear a mask if you are following social distancing norms.
That means when you are running or jogging, make sure you are six feet away from others. This is because coronavirus is a viral infection that spreads through tiny respiratory droplets present in the air. If you maintain a safe, appropriate distance, the risk of getting infected will be less.

  • The risk of wearing a mask while exercising

Your motive for wearing a mask while exercising might be for your protection, but this comes with a number of risks.
While exercising we breathe more air and for that our lungs have to work harder. A face mask restricts the flow of air into the lungs, which will make you feel breathless and tired.
Masks can also become wet due to sweat when worn for a long time. This can also cause discomfort.

  • If you insist

If you do not want to work out without a mask outdoors, then here are a few things that you must keep in mind.
If you are already suffering from some underlying health conditions like asthma or heart disease, it is not recommended to wear mask while exercising at all.
Don't push your limit: Do not go overboard when exercising. If you start feeling tired, then stop.
