Unfamiliar names for 30 everyday things

  • aglet : the plastic coating at the end of a shoelace
  • agraffe : the wired cage that holds the cork in a bottle of champagne, also called a "muselet" (from the French word for 'to muzzle')
  • armscye : the armhole in an item of clothing
  • box tent : the little plastic table protecting a pizza, sometimes called a "pizza saver"
  • cornicione:  the crusty outer part of a pizza
  • crapulence: the nasty sick feeling you get after eating or drinking way too much
  • drupelets: the bumps on raspberries or blackberries
  • fipple: the mouthpiece of a recorder or similar wind instrument which is blown endwise
  • glabella – the area of skin between your eyebrows and just above your nose
  • griffonage: badly written and unreadable handwriting
  • halfpace: the small landing at the top of a flight of stairs where you have to turn and take another flight of stairs, either up or down
  • keeper : the loop on a belt that keeps the end in place after it has passed through the buckle
  • lanula : the pale crescent-shaped area at the base of a fingernail
  • lemniscate:  figure-eight or ∞-shaped curves, like the infinity symbol
  • Morton's Toe:  a second toe that is longer than the big toe
  • obelus :  the symbol for division  ÷
  • octothorpe:  hash tag or the pound  sign #
  • paresthesia: that burning or prickling "pins and needles" sensation
  • peen : the opposite side to the striking face of a hammer
  • petrichor : the lovely earthy scent that occurs when rain falls on dry soil.
  • philtrum : the little hollow groove on your upper lip and beneath your nose. It’s also called a “Cupid’s bow.”
  • Phloem bundles : those long stringy things you find when you peel a banana
  • phosphenes : the lights you see when you close your eyes and press your fingers on your eyelids
  • pips : are the little bumps (nubs) on the surface of the rubber coating of a table tennnis paddle
  • purlicue: the space between the thumb and forefingers
  • punt : the indent on the bottom of some bottles, like wine bottles
  • Snellen Chart : the standard eye exam chart used to measure visual acuity
  • quincunx: an arrangement of five things in a square or rectangle with one at each corner and one in the middle, as on dice
  • tines : the little prongs of a fork
  • tittle :  the dot on top of the letters i and j
