Women who have wanted to learn or improve their English but couldn't afford it now have an opportunity to attend free classes in Bahrain.
Teacher Sumayya left America and settled in Bahrain after becoming Muslim. She now lives in Busaiteen with cats that she took in from the streets of Bahrain.
In 2019, in an effort to support the community, she converted the main hall of her home into a classroom with enough seats to hold about 10 students, complete with a 3-meter wide whiteboard. The first night of classes brought in so many students there weren't enough seats! She prepares the lesson plans and worksheets ahead of time, which are also provided for free to students. On class days, she hides the cats away, sets out the worksheets, papers, pens, pencils, erasers, etc. then waits for students to arrive. Sumayya supports her efforts by working during the day and using her salary to provide materials and supplies for her students and classroom.
The free lessons are available to all women regardless of nationality, religion, background, job, status, etc. Her students come from a variety of backgrounds. Women from Syria, Costa Rica, Egypt, Bahrain, India, Bangladesh, and more attend classes. All women are welcome to register by emailing: AmericanEnglish.bh@yahoo.com
Space is limited. Different levels, from beginner to advanced, are taught on different nights. Email for more information. Classes are currently postponed for safety reasons and will resume as soon as it's safe to do so. Teacher Sumayya does not offer lessons for children or men.
