Short story entry: Can you keep a secret? Arihant Jain, 15

The year is 1969. You just witnessed the world's first crewed moon landing, along with millions of other people, all in awe of this remarkable achievement. But you know something they don’t. Something that would change how they see this scene unfold.

One would wonder why no human went to the moon after the successful landing in 1972. As always, there is a story behind it, albeit one you may not want to hear. The landing was a race to get humans to space to explore new horizons - or was it?  Could there have been - another reason? Is it possible that, other than reaching the moon, world powers searched for something else?

I knew what their objectives were. I, for one, know well enough to live in the shadows, out of their reach. I must warn you, for what you are about to read may shock you - and will change your life entirely. You will have to run and run and run until you cannot run any longer. Then, they will find you. But of course, that is if - and only if - you cannot keep quiet.

They chase me as I write this. You need to know the truth about the landings.

The landings were not to show the technological prowess of a country, and neither were they for research about the composition of the moon. I could tell you outright, but what is the fun in that?

I will pose a scenario. When you see an infestation of mice in your house, you do one of two things: you leave the house, which is incredibly inefficient, or you call the exterminator.

I want you to now think about the government. We know its hiding something, but what could it be? One of the only things that are true of their motives is that they want to protect our planet. So, how would their motives translate to the moon landing? Perhaps building something there, or maybe - something ominous that one cannot even imagine. Something related to the scenario. Protection of our planet - but at what cost?

The same thing applied to the moon landings. They were extermination projects, of the largest scale ever seen. Why else do you think they never properly recorded all the logs of the landings? Why else were the rockets discarded, and the parts that reached earth mostly destroyed?

It was to hide the evidence. You may be sceptical but look closely. Why does the equipment used to conduct ‘research’ so huge and with parts that looked like turrets?

These rovers went around the moon, killing all that moved on the planet. The humans knew that they had to end these life forms before they gained complexity, and before they could pose a threat to us. The rovers remain on the moon, searching for any remaining evidence of life. Similar rovers have been sent to Mars, to scout for any potential threats before humans move to start new settlements there.

All those marks on the moon from meteor crashes are shadows of colonies made by these – beings. They are carbon-based life forms, which look like huge rodents, deriving sustenance in a similar way as plants - only on sunlight, polar ice and trace nutrients in the soil.

I do not know much about how they operated or survived. One of the things I know is that they were mostly near the dark side of the moon, and were evolving rapidly, as well as improving their abilities.

What have they done that deserves such a terrible fate? Nothing. They were killed just because the truth is that, however much we speculate, humanity is fearful of what lies outside. Outside our haven we call Earth. Outside - in the vast expanse of space.

I know this because I was an operator for the mission. Since I was the best of the best, I was chosen for a special mission. All I was told was that I had to train men to become part of a special international squad to prevent threats to our security. I trained the astronauts to do what they did. I had not realised what I had done until it was too late.

Now I live on the run, away from all whom I love, wishing that I won't be caught. But the most important question, now that I’ve told you all this, is:

“Can you keep a secret?”
