Short Story Entry by Ann Maria Thomson,15 HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

My eyelashes went up slowly. I lay motionless. In front of me laid a mixture of colours sparkling in a dark canvas. I again closed my eyes to think where I am.

The tube light in my head doesn’t light up. I tried to get up, but pain was gushing through my nerves. I turned around and saw the same mixture of colours along with some round figures.

When I turned to left there was a huge ball emitting strong rays of light. I saw many circles around where I was standing. My head was going insane. There was no one beside me. The warning signal had come.

My tummy began roaring. There was nothing to eat. I lay down again and closed my eyes. I wanted to sleep but my taste buds were becoming a villain. Suddenly thoughts started churning in my brain.

From the lush green mountains of Switzerland to the Capital City of the world, my life had been a wonderful rollercoaster.

I was an astronaut in NASA and me along with twelve other crew members were on a mission to the moon.

I opened my eyes and the truth struck me: I was on the moon. The round figures were planets, the circles were orbits and the strong rays of light were from the sun.

The space shuttle had exploded. I don’t know if any of my fellow crew members are alive. This thought made an excruciating pain all over my body. What was I going to do? Will I ever see my family?

I saw a cloud of dust behind me. Some turbulence was happening there. I had no idea why. Moreover, I was becoming hungrier.

I knew my death would take place there itself. But my curiosity didn’t want to tell ‘RIP’ to me. I wanted to see what was going to happen. The gas and dust in the cloud were beginning to collapse. I had studied that it is because of their gravitational attraction.

A nearby supernova explosion or galactic collision may have released energy to this cloud. This energy might be the reason behind the gravitational attraction.

I wished I had been awake a long time ago because the beauty of the space cannot be enjoyed in just one glance. The blend of red and blue colours along with the twinkle of stars made me forget my pain. I decided to stroll across the moon.

Despite being exhausted I slowly set my legs into motion. After a while, I saw a footprint. It was clearly sculpted in the lunar soil like a statue and I had no idea whose it was.

Maybe Neil Armstrong’s or might be someone else also. I felt an inner joy because one day when someone visits the moon, they will also see my footmark.

‘BOOM, BOOM’. It sounded like an explosion. I saw that the cloud of gas and dust was beginning to collapse. A material at the centre was beginning to heat up.

My body was becoming warm. It appeared to be like the heart of that cloud. It was heating up so much that beams of light literally made me blind. I covered my eyes with my hands. As I covered my eyes, I fell asleep. When I woke up, there were no beams of light and no sound. I stood up and decided to view all the planets.

The remainder of my death paralyzed my wish but I knew I had to explore. It was an amazing sight. The sun, planets, galaxies, orbits and stars made me forget my departure from life.

Along with them, I saw many asteroids, meteoroids and moons of different planets. Our mother is so beautiful. From space, Earth looks like a blue marble with white swirls.

The combination of blue, brown, yellow, green and white makes it the most beautiful planet of the solar system. The radiation and vacuum of outer space was making me sick but I couldn’t stop touring its beauty.

The cloud of dust and gas began collapsing again. In its centre, a dense, hot core was formed. Materials like dust, some molecules were going into cloud. At the time I became aware of what was going on. The hot core at the centre is called a protostar.

I was witnessing the birth of a star. But all those dust and materials doesn’t end up as star, they can also be planets, comets and so on. All my strength had drained.

My muscles started aching. My bones told me, ‘’ Dear, sorry. We can’t move a step.’’ My head was spinning and aching. I knew the time had come to give up. A star takes 10 million years to form. This was its beginning. My eyes shut down and I wished the new star:

‘’ HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!’’
