Mulan - Film Review

Disney’s latest real-life reboot ‘Mulan’ continues to attract movie-lovers to the company’s streaming platform, Disney Plus.

If you have ever watched the original 1998 film, this all-action adventure not only follows almost the same storyline but adds some unexpected plot and character additions which add tenfold to the tension and excitement.

Lui Yifei takes the main protagonist spot as the film’s heroine, Hau Mulan.
She acts superbly throughout the film as she puts her life on the line for her family and country.

It has an elegant and engaging performance from the start.

Set-in ancient China, Bori Khan (Jason Scott Lee) seeks revenge for the death of his father and he is joined by new company this time round.

Acted by Gong Li, Xianniang, a shape-shifting witch, is Disney's most badass villain.

China’s Emperor orders one man from every family to hand themselves over to the army to help defend the land against the northern invaders.

In steps Mulan who decides to steal her father’s armour, sword and horse and set off to fight in her aging father’s place, disguising herself as a boy.

What follows is action-packed to say the least!

The many fight scenes make for an enjoyable watch as warriors perform martial arts along with using ancient weaponry.

But it’s Mulan who is the most breath-taking in battle as she uses her ‘Chi’ to her advantage making her fighting both effective and deadly.

Acclaimed filmmaker Niki Caro brings the epic tale of China’s legendary warrior to life but, be warned, it hasn’t the family-friendly charm of the 1998 animated musical.

There are the occasional laughs but the tone tends to be more serious.
Putting that aside, the visuals, acting and plot alone make it one to watch and, whilst the theatres are closed in Bahrain, the Mulan home movie experience is the next best thing.
