Women are prone to many Gynecological issues and usually see a doctor complaining of painful cramps, severe abdominal pain, or heavy and/or prolonged bleeding between periods that could lead to a more serious illness.
Ms. Saadia, a 46 year old from Pakistan visited Zulekha Hospital Sharjah, Obstetrics and Gynecology Department complaining of heavy period and severe pain during her menstruation for the last five years.
Following the laboratory and investigation tests carried out by her treating doctor Dr. Humera Raees, Specialist Obstetrician and Laparoscopic Gynecologist, it was confirmed she had multiple fibroids. Her womb was filled by fibroids of varying sizes and the inner layer of the womb was thickened. After ruling out cancer by doing the Hysteroscopy guided endometrial sampling, a Laparoscopic Hysterectomy was successfully performed by Dr. Raees and her team wherein the womb full of fibroids were removed by a key-hole surgery. The operation took about two hour and half hours.
Dr. Humera Raees stated, “The risk is higher with her age and the symptoms she had for long. She may have continued to bleed heavily; she could be anemic and continuously have painful menstrual cycle that may disrupt her day to day activities. Her inner layer of the womb had extensively thickened, and that may have led to cancer. Saadia is doing well post her surgery and feeling better, comfortable, pain free and carrying out daily activities.”

Fibroids are abnormal growths that develop in or on a woman's uterus. Sometimes these tumors become quite large and cause severe abdominal pain and heavy periods. In other cases, they cause no signs or symptoms at all. If left untreated, fibroids can continue to grow, both in size and number. As these tumors take over the uterus, the symptoms will become worse and fibroids can increase pain and the heavy bleeding will become heavier and it may be accompanied by severe cramping.
