Food adventures and discoveries

I am no great bread baker, and because of this I am on a mission to teach myself how to bake bread. Our family has this thing where our bread might be cooked through, but it is so hard that you can kill someone with it. We are not big on successful bread baking.

So when I, a couple of days ago, saw a dish from Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman ( Stromboli ), where she uses store bought dough and makes this great veggie roll-‘thingy’, I was hooked. Only problem, is I couldn’t seem to find store bought dough. With determination and an unwillingness to give up on making this wonderful dish. I started doing research and found a great easy pizza dough recipe, again from Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman.

I checked and saw I had all the ingredients needed for this and tackled the task. Reading the recipe over and over, watching the video a couple of times too, just to make sure that I did not miss anything. I changed the Stromboli recipe by adding store bought roast chicken.

With confidence and a clear plan and instructions to follow, marking off each step, I tackled this task, this great mountain of making pizza dough, was the first task.

I took each step and followed all the instructions and as it all unfolded before I knew it I had my very own, home made pizza dough. I used half for the Stromboli and the other half I wrapped up and put in the freezer for another day. I was, to say the least, completely thrilled and so very happy.

The true test, however, would come when I am making the Stromboli. So I set off to making the Stromboli. I, again, following the instructions step by step, only changing the few ingredients from veggies to chicken. I put the dish in the oven and waited for the 30 minutes.

It came out and a I was very pleased when I saw that it was a success. Making new dishes, especially dishes I know I might have issues with, is like taking an exam and not knowing how you did in the end.

It was a great hit at home, we did have quite a bit of leftover and enjoyed it the following day. It is rich and tasty and the dough was perfect, it did not go soggy and was not tasteless at all.

I encourage you all to try a new and scary recipe, try something new, you might just surprise yourself.

Next up, I am going to try my hand at some local traditional Bahraini food…

…the food adventures continue..
