Short story entry : Little Big Things by Neha Jewel (19) - Adult entry

Daniel Craig is a software developer; he aspires to become a technical architect (the highest position on the technical career ladder).

Daniel lived a busy, monotonous life and he was content. He was literally a working machine toiling day and night. Over the years, he turned out to be a workaholic, addicted to coffee, which is a deadly combination.

"I have to work hard to achieve my goal" is his personal affirmation.

He never wasted time thinking of relationships in his life. He didn’t have time for his parents or grandparents. Once a year, as a routine, he visited his grandfather, not because he wanted to, but his mother forced him to.

This year also Daniel flew from New York to Missouri, his grandfather's little town.

The peaceful Missouri contrasts the life Daniel leads in New York. New York, a city of dreams with busy roads and ambitious youth was his domicile for years. Whereas Missouri is more of a farm set up encompassed by exciting flora and fauna.

Green corn fields and clear lakes adorned his grandfather’s village. Even the sun looked marvellous in the village, the rising sun and the setting sun painted the sky vividly.

Daniel’s grandfather runs a local bakery in the town."Come 'er Dan" grandpa Chris called out to have tea together.

They started talking about their lives and Missouri's farming season. In between, Daniel was distracted by the calls from his office and Grandpa Chris wasn't pleased.

"What's with you Dan?" he asked. "It’s work grandpa, it’s stressing me out".

"Yes, I could see that. I made ginger tea, your favourite and you didn't seem to enjoy it".

"Easy for you to say grandpa, you have retired, you had an easy life and you have your own bakery but I’m still struggling to achieve my dreams".

The old man replied: "Come, let's go for a walk and please leave your phone behind,” Daniel shrugged but grandpa gave a stern look. The wind was breezy and the setting sun painted the sky crimson. Daniel was glad that he didn't take his phone or else he would have missed this view. They walked in silence.

When they entered the bakery, the aroma of freshly baked bread and coffee beans hit their nostrils it was "euphoric" a kind of feeling that would make the poets fall in love with life.

Daniel smiled, a full ear to ear smile. As a kid, he used to come there all the time to get his grandpa's bread and cakes. Grandpa went to the kitchen counter and brought back a freshly-baked cake with smooth butter frosting. Daniel's eyes glinted in joy, "you made chocolate butter cake for me?".

The old man replied "Of course I did, happy birthday kiddo.”

The sight of the cake and the grandpa's efforts brought tears to his eyes. He forgot it was his birthday, all he cared about was what financial year it was and the tax rates.

Daniel sliced the cake, and took a bite of it. It tasted the same as ever, so buttery, and so creamy and extremely delicious. Grandpa’s bakery made him nostalgic.

It reminded him of his first bicycle that he used to ride as a kid and his first teenage love, Darlene. It reminded him of his vacations in Missouri, his youth and the happy times there.

He felt like nothing had changed, but in reality, everything did change. He isn't that splashy school boy cycling in the little town of Missouri with his friends. Today he is a busy New Yorker. He has fulfilled his dreams, but had forgotten to live life to its fullest.

The Missouri visit revamped his memories and his entire perspective of life changed. He realised that he had lived a mechanical life focussing on work and phone calls.

In Missouri, he walked down the memory lane with his grandfather and he understood that it was the life that he longed for. Brooding on nostalgia, Daniel made a life changing decision. He wanted to get back his younger, lively self and wanted to live a life of peace in his serene village.

Daniel took a decision that may seem impulsive to career aspirers, but he was very much sure of his choice.

He took a break from his corporate life and all competitive business ventures. He decided to indulge himself in the beauty of his little village. He wanted to grab his passion of living a life in solace far away from a humdrum life.

Daniel wasn’t sure if it was the right thing to do, but he knew how much it could make him happy. A simple walk to the bakery gave him his childhood back.

It is funny how people can tell you things without saying anything at all, right?
