Short Story Submission: The Horror Of The Fog By: Ashraf El Tahir. Age:17

The Horror Of the Fog

The sun shone through the window, I wasn't taken away by the Fog last night. I looked at Perida’s empty quilt. No no, “PERIDA, WHERE ARE YOU?” Every time I searched a room for her, I would hoarsely shout her name. She wouldn't have left alone. My knees hit the ground, as tears ran down my eyes, “please, not you too.”

Then I heard her voice, “Alex, please don't shout you are scaring me.” Perida poked her head through a small crack of the back door and looked at me worriedly.

I hugged her closely and gently said, “why did you leave Perida? I told you not to go outside alone.”

Perida worriedly said, "Alex I couldn't wake you up, you were having a nightmare and." She pointed at a familiar cane leaning on the backdoor. “Old man Ravi got taken away.”

I sighed, “May he rest in peace. Next time, please stay until I wake up”.
Perida sadly said, “There is no next time. It's only me and you left.”
My heart filled up with unwillingness at the idea of her being taken away or worse her left alone. I looked at her, she was barefoot, with unkempt hair and dirty robes. How could I possibly leave her alone?

“It's fine, your big brother won’t let the Fog take you.” glanced at the clock, 10 am I have 8 hours left until night. Whenever night comes you will always be forced to sleep however that won’t stop me from making my preparations to make sure that we will survive.

Eight
I spent that time cleaning up Perida and feeding her.

Seven
I took her to old man Ravi’s candy store, the air was still filled with the smell of candy and I could still hear him say, “Take care of yourselves, I won't be here forever.” I buried his belongings in hopes of him receiving them in the afterlife and prayed.

Six
I took a rusty sword from the old swordsman’s house. Perida was not happy, but she understood.

Five
I gave Perida a small shield, hopefully she won’t need it.

Four
In an old chest, I found some old candles.

Three
I tried to feed Perida, but she couldn't eat anything.

Two
Perida was exhausted and went to sleep early, it's better this way.

One
I stabbed a knife into my left shoulder and then bandaged it up, so the pain can force me awake.

Zero
[WAKE UP]. I jumped up, the dim candlelight illuminated the dark room. Oh God, it's night. It has been more than one year since I last saw the night. A shiver went down my spine as I slowly looked at my sister’s empty quilt. Then I heard her scream from the distance in terror “ALEX, PLEASE SAVE ME.”

I shouted, “PERIDA!” I grabbed the rusty sword and rushed outside. The moonlight shone down as I chased her voice into the Fog. I stumbled, but I continued following her screams until they stopped. After a few minutes of searching I reached a clearing.

My heart froze as I looked upon the horror. A black wolf was on top of Perida, its teeth were red with her blood. The wolf was tearing her leg off. I screamed, “NO GET YOUR FILTHY TEETH OFF HER.” I rushed at the werewolf slicing at his head and tore it limb from limb in a frenzy. Until finally, it was dead. I kneeled down, picking up Perida’s extremely light body. I had saved her, but why is she so light?

A cloaked pale man appeared behind me and said, “look closer at what you have done.” Huh? My eyes cleared up as I looked down and saw what I had done. My bloody hands were holding Perida's decapitated head with her eyes still open in shock. Her mutilated body was lying around in pieces and the corpse of the wolf was gone. The world froze as I looked up at the man with tears running down my eyes. The man smiled at me with his fangs and stabbed his arm through my chest.

My body fell onto the ground as I wondered in despair “Why? Why did this happen?”

Then he came. From the void.

With every step he took, the air shook with his long dark-violet hair fluttering behind him. An otherworldly aura was emitted from the man walking towards me. The pale man behind me stumbled backwards and was petrified.

He looked towards it in disgust and said [Freeze]. He was the voice that woke me up. Snow fell, as the vampire’s body was frozen instantly. It was the most beautiful thing I ever witnessed. The man looked at me with his brilliant cyan eyes and asked,
