School Environment (Third in the series of four articles)

Asad Meah, a CEO & founder at Awaken the Greatness Within, once said, "We don't grow when things are easy; we grow when we face challenges." So far, we have agreed how the first years of teaching in almost every teacher’s career may be the most challenging if their surroundings are unsupportive and uncooperative. However, a teacher’s challenges in their first year of teaching may not be limited only to the difficulties of dealing with students or managing the classroom. Challenges may also come in the form of dealing with colleagues at the beginning of their journey. When asked about their challenges from their colleagues and the school environment, teacher Rawan, a fourth-grade English teacher in a primary girls school, reported that she felt she was sinking in an unsupportive environment. She explained that as a new teacher, she had reported some problematic interactions with her colleagues. The school administrators could not give her a serious hearing. Besides, some of her colleagues weren't collaborating with her at all, and others were simply hostile. Teacher Sara, having served five years in teaching the English language at a primary boys school, recalls the beginning of her journey by using the words "sinking", "unsupportive", and "not recognizing nor appreciating". Her words clearly show suffering during her teaching profession because of her environment and the colleagues she worked with. Hence, we can conclude that her effort was not appreciated at all. All the teachers worldwide will have their own suffering during the first years of teaching as they are not used to the environment. They will feel that they are alone and no one is there to help them. What must they do in such a situation? The teachers we talked to, over the years have gained some collective wisdom to share with those new to teaching. First, teachers must help themselves to overcome these challenges. Second, they must trust their abilities. As a teacher, you must quickly get used to your colleagues and find ways to communicate with them. In the teaching profession, just as with your students, you must build positive relationships with your co-workers as we cannot choose to not collaborate for our long-term mutual success.
