Winter season has arrived and with it arrives the magnificent Greater Flamingos. Bahrain witnesses as many as thousands of Greater Flamingos each year. These birds come in flocks of hundreds from across the region and continents.
Their feathers are pinkish-white while wing coverts are red. It is believed the color comes from their food mainly consisting of algae that grows in shallow water bodies or marshes and brine shrimps. Areas such as Tubli and Nabi Saleh are perfect habitat for these birds.
In recent years there has been a decline in the numbers due to climate change, landfills and water contamination which affects the growth of the algae, the main source for their food. Some environmentalist and photographers like me have been monitoring these birds and hope we could do more to protect these beautiful birds and their habitat.
