Watching a flock of Flamingos enjoying the blue-green waters of the Hawar Island, I felt a strange connection with the gorgeous migratory birds that fly thousands of miles to bask in the Bahrain Sun every year!
Just as we, expats from different directions come to this ‘tiny nation with a big heart’!
Bahrain offers great expat quality of life. No wonder, we women feel safe, empowered and socially connected here!
I am Shikha Varma, an Indian with global spirit, a photographer with unique perspective and a short filmmaker of intense sensibilities. We are a Bapco family, blessed with two daughters. Elder one is in Holland and the younger studying in BSB here.
Joining AWA as its Photography group, ‘Shutterflies’ chairperson in 2015 was probably one of the most sensible decisions I’ve ever taken.
As they say, the best way to learn is to teach! The fun workshops and photoshoots that I conduct not only unleash the hidden talents in others but polishes mine too!
Currently I am on the Executive board as the Membership Chairperson. My task is to encourage women from diverse nationalities and walks of life to join us, especially recruit members from the U.S Navy base and the Embassy as they come for a short duration and need to connect to the community immediately.
As an event planner, it is my absolute pleasure to have organized many ‘feel-good’ events for AWA - Diwali, Holi, Bahrain Quiz, Heart of the Ocean with Clean-Up Bahrain, and during the pandemic, ‘Runway 2020’ – A super hit online fashion show that was truly one of a kind!
AWA boosts the ‘Happy Hormone’ in me!
It has enriched my life and has given me numerous opportunities to associate and ‘flamingle’ with the multitude flocks of amazing flamingos…oops…women!
