U18 Short Story Entry, Ann Maria Thomson It all started with Anne

She dressed up ready to go to school. She headed to the breakfast table, gulped in the milk and toast as fast as she could. As she was leaving the house she said, '' I love you mom. Thank you for being my very own momma.''

She met her friends on the road and together they went to the bus stop. The bus arrived 10 minutes late. Within 30 minutes of drive, they reached the school and as she got down, she called out to the driver, '' It's ok that you are late. We are on time. Bye Mr. Martin'' to which he replied with a wide smile '' Traffic was hectic. Bye Anne''.

She met the school janitor cleaning the corridor and wished, ''Good morning Jenny. Hope you have a good day''. Jenny wished her back smiling and continued her work.

Anne's mom started off her day getting ready for office. She took a taxi as her car was in the repair shop. The taxi driver dropped her at the subway. As she paid the fee she said '' Thank you. it was a nice drive.'' The taxi driver smiled and said, ''Welcome and make sure to take another trip.'' She replied, '' Sure friend'' and headed off east. The taxi driver felt content when he heard a stranger addressing him as ' FRIEND'.

Mr. Martin went to 'Lee Man's Cafe' to have his morning coffee and croissant. As he was enjoying his cup, he noticed an elderly woman with a grocery bag trying to cross the busy wheels. He kept the coffee cup on the table and reached towards the old woman. He stood there with her for a while and then helped her cross the road by holding her hand. As he reached the other side of the road, he felt a sense of calmness and joy. Her wrinkled, cold fingers interlocked into his heart. A sense of feeling that you are not lonely in this vast world. As he left her hands, she said, ''Thank you my son. May God bless you.'' She handed over a rose from her grocery bag, hugged him and waved as she got in the bus. He kept the rose in his breast pocket and headed to complete his cup.

Jenny finished her work at school and headed to ' St. Mary hospital' where her husband was admitted. Her husband Mr. Jude had been battling cancer for the past 2 years. Jenny entered his room smiling. Her face was glowing with joy. She came humming a tune and kissed '' Good day honey. How are you?'' The radiation of joy from her eyes penetrated deep into the deepest corners of heart. The twinkle in her eyes stimulated his cells. They began talking about the day and it was time for the sponge bath. Shortly after the bath and lunch, she said, '' Babe, let's dance.'' To which he replied, '' You know I can't get off the bed.'' '' Oh boy, I know that. I will dance here on the floor and you shake your hands, put on expressions and move your head.'' She had put on his favourite music and they both began to swing in joy. They were truly happy.

The taxi driver had several other trips that day. After a busy day, he visited the ‘Home Charity Association’. He met the receptionist and said, ‘’ I would like to donate some money for the people affected by the Houston flood.’’ He handed over the envelope to the receptionist and said, ‘’ You’re doing a great job, Friend. May you have a good night.’’ The receptionist got surprised by this comment that he thought the man was mad. He wished the taxi driver the same and couldn’t stop feeling joyous about the comment. The envelope had the entire amount he had collected that day.

The old lady headed to the grave of her husband. She kept the flowers on his grave and lighted candles. She said, ‘’ Today I met a stranger with a heart of gold. He helped me to cross the road. For a while I thought, you had come in his form to help me. He had a very beautiful smile. I miss your smile. I hope it’s the same with you’’ She chuckled at this comment, kissed his grave and made her way to her home to prepare a tasty dinner for her children and grandchildren.

Jude said to his nurse, ‘’ Thank you Ms. Stacy for taking care of me with such care and love.  I will always remember you. Hope you have a good night sleep.’’ He handed over some chocolates as a token of gratitude. The nurse became happy hearing this and wished him good night and went off.
