Novak Djokovic Makes History - TheVSportsBlog

On Sunday 11th June 2023, Novak Djokovic defeated Casper Ruud in the final of the Roland Garros to achieve a monumental feat, Djokovic now holds 23 Grand Slam titles, the most of any man in the open era.

The era defining moment came after 3 hours and 13 minutes of tennis in the final of the Roland Garros. The absence of Rafael Nadal, due to injury, meant that the heavy favourites were Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. The two faced off in the semi-finals, however, Alcaraz suffered from cramps early in the third set. After this point Alcaraz's movement on court was greatly impeded and Djokovic defeated him with relative ease.

The young Norweigan, Casper Ruud, defeated Alexander Zverev to reach his 3rd Grand Slam final out of the previous 5 Grand Slams he has played. An immense achievement in itself. Despite this, he was unable to truly challenge the experienced Djokovic. This title allowed Djokovic to enter unknown territory, becoming first man ever to reach 23 Grand Slam titles in the open era.
