Two Senegalese teenagers, Seydou and Moussa, leave Dakar to travel to Europe where they believe they will have a brighter future in Europe. Yet between their dreams and reality lies a treacherous journey through a labyrinth of checkpoints, the scorched Saharan desert, a fetid North African prison and the vast waters of the Mediterranean where thousands have died packed inside vessels barely fit for passage. The film was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Film. At Venice Film Festival it won the Silver Lion Award for Best Director and the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor and it was nominated for the Golden Lion Award for Best Film.
