MPs set to debate dash cam proposal

A proposal encouraging motorists to install dashboard cameras in their vehicles to enhance road safety, accountability and transparency in case of incidents is set for debate during Parliament’s weekly session on Tuesday.

The foreign affairs, defence and national security committee has recommended approval of the proposal submitted by MP Dr Mariam Al Dhaen, a member of the Strategic Thinking Bloc.

According to the committee, the initiative aims to serve the public interest by addressing several issues, including:

- Preventing manipulation and deception in traffic accident claims where no witnesses or CCTV footage are available.
- Deterring fraudulent or staged road accidents, thus protecting insurance companies from false claims.
- Enhancing self-monitoring and promoting public and private deterrence.
- Reducing reckless and aggressive driving behaviour on the roads.
