Green light for Sports City tender move

Bahrain’s upcoming Sports City project is set to become one of the kingdom’s largest and most ambitious developments, with plans for a modern, integrated complex combining world-class sports facilities, educational institutions and tourism attractions.

The multi-phase project, to be located in the Southern Governorate, is expected to transform Bahrain into a regional centre for sporting excellence and community engagement.

The Southern Municipal Council yesterday unanimously approved a proposal for the Tender Board to issue bids for the project’s first phase in 2026, with the initial stage estimated to cost more than BD100 million.

Council chairman Abdulla Abdullatif said the Sports City has been envisioned as more than a sporting venue – it will be a comprehensive development designed to serve athletes, students and the wider community.

“We don’t just want another stadium; we want a full-fledged city that integrates sports, education and recreation,” Mr Abdullatif said. “It should be a destination that inspires young people, supports tourism and contributes to the national economy.”
