Bahrain is set to witness another breathtaking celestial display on Wednesday, as the skies light up with the year’s closest and brightest ‘super moon’, according to Bahraini astronomer Mohammed Redha Al Asfoor.
The phenomenon, known scientifically as a super moon, occurs when the full moon coincides with the point in its orbit closest to Earth – called the perigee. During this event, the moon appears noticeably larger and more luminous than usual.
“On Wednesday evening, the full moon of the Islamic month of Jumada Al Awwal will coincide with the moon’s arrival at its nearest point to Earth – around 356,840km away,” Mr Al Asfoor explained. “This will make it the closest full moon of the year 2025.”
He added that the super moon will appear 14 per cent larger and 30pc brighter than when it is at its farthest point from Earth, known as the apogee, when it appears as a so-called micro moon.
“Observers will be able to see a noticeably bigger and brighter moon dominating the sky,” he said. “It’s a natural wonder that always fascinates stargazers and casual observers alike.”
According to Mr Al Asfoor, the moon will reach its peak illumination at 4.19pm local time, shortly before rising over Bahrain’s horizon at 4.36pm, just before sunset. The celestial spectacle will remain visible throughout the night, until it sets at 6.37am the following morning.
