Community welcomes new year with Greek pie-cutting ritual

The traditional Greek ‘Cutting of the Pie for 2026’ event was staged at the Intercontinental Hotel, Bahrain alongside an awards ceremony.

Ellinomatheia examination certificates were awarded to students studying Greek as a second language by the Honorary Consul of Greece in Bahrain Aliki Chatzara-Valores.

The Certificate of Attainment in Greek is the official, globally recognised proof of proficiency in modern Greek for non-native speakers, established in 1998 by the Greek Ministry of Education.

The event was also attended by Greek Ambassador from Kuwait Ioannis Plotas.

The tradition of baking and cutting a special ‘pita’ (which can mean a loaf of bread, a cake, or pie) is also followed by organisations, schools, clubs and companies during the month of January.
