Ramadan in focus

Bahraini men deep in special prayers at Abu Saiba Ma’atam.

Muslims devote their time to reciting the Holy Quran and doing acts of goodwill during Ramadan.

More time is spent on prayers during the last 10 days of the Holy Month, which are considered sacred and spiritual as Laylat Al Qadr (the Night of Destiny) is marked during this time, writes Reem Al Daaysi.

The occasion has significant meaning in the Islamic calendar as it is when Muslims believe the Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammed.

The exact date is unknown, but it is common for Muslims to gather in mosques and households on every odd-numbered date of the last 10 days of Ramadan to observe the occasion by reciting the Holy Quran and dedicating the evenings to prayers. Laylat Al Qadr is said to be a night when the blessings and mercy of Allah are abundant, sins are forgiven and supplications accepted.

According to the Holy Quran, rewards reaped during Laylat Al Qadr are far greater than those earned on any other day of the year – equalling the rewards of 1,000 months of worship.
