Bahraini boxer makes history with first win

SENSATIONAL Sayed Fadhel Abbas Abdulla has delivered a piece of boxing history by recording Bahrain’s first-ever triumph in the the ASBC Asian Boxing Championships. The 15-year-old ‘Shakorah Slugger’ beat all the odds by unanimously winning all three tough two-minute rounds against three-time UAE national champion Hussein Al Ahmed.
“I’m thrilled and so proud to represent Bahrain,” the winner said.
Bahrain’s delighted national boxing  coach Tony Davis, who was ringside in Fujairah yesterday, added: “The young Bahraini carried out the tactics very well against the taller Emirati by forcing the pace of the bout, winning every round clearly to become Bahrain’s first winner in a major boxing competition.
“Sayed Fadel should be very proud of this achievement having only been in the sport a very short time.
“Just seeing his reaction when he received the decision just showed how much it really meant to him. This young boxer’s dedication and work ethic has really impressed me.”
Davis also praised assistant national coach Jassim Darwish, who has been working closely with the young star, and international technical official and delegate, Viorel Sima, for the support they have given him to bring Bahrain boxing to the forefront.
Abbas now faces a quarter-final battle tomorrow against the hugely-experienced Uzbek Idkop Kurdtov in the Asian Junior Championships.
No matter what the outcome, his ‘historical success’ has already made headlines around the amateur boxing circuit announcing that Bahrain has arrived on the scene with a bang.
