Big rugby match action in Bahrain on Friday

Bahrain Rugby Football Club’s (BRFC) first team squad members are ‘chomping at the bit’ and ready to take on Dubai Tigers at home in the first West Asia Premiership clash of 2020 on Friday.

The reigning champions will be hosting four of the season’s remaining fixtures at their Janabiya stronghold and will be hoping the mighty Red Wall of support will help them achieve a hat-trick of league triumphs.

"The team are chomping at the bit to get back into XVs rugby after a lengthy break following the end of the first half of the season and the Dubai 7s,” said head coach Adam Wallace.

“The team have shown a fantastic work ethic during the break and used the down time as an opportunity to improve their strength and conditioning rather than rest. This has resulted in us having a fully fit squad available for selection this week and should see a strong Bahrain side running out in front of the mighty ‘redwall’ supporters on Friday."

After a convincing first half of the season, Bahrain are sitting= in second place just two points behind leaders and old rivals Dubai Exiles who inflicted Bahrain's sole defeat thus far.

This weekend they welcome the tenacious newcomers Dubai Tigers who haven't been shy of getting their claws into their Premiership rivals during their inaugural season in the league. They currently sit in fifth place having defeated both Dragons & Knights Eagles and were just being pipped by Quins by two points at the death.

“At Dubai 7s in December, Bahrain was represented well in Gulf Men’s Cup, Under 19s and Gulf Veterans competitions, and in the Ladies Netball,” said club chairman Mike Cunningham. “With the New Year break over, we’re excited about the return of West Asia Premiership rugby to Bahrain.

“At the midpoint of the WAP competition, we’re sitting second in the league and our 1st XV are keen to complete the defence of the title we’ve held for the last two seasons.

Four out of our remaining six games will be played in Bahrain and we’re looking forward to hosting big crowds for these games.”

The game kicks-off at 5pm and as a large crowd is expected fans are urged to arrive at the ground early. Fans living abroad or travelling away this weekend can watch all the action via a GDNonline link, thanks to a media partnership with BRFC.
