#BeMoreNicole is a hashtag I hope goes viral. It has surfaced after a doctor posted this very moving message on social media.
At school I was bullied quite a bit. Every day, the other kids would throw stones at me as I walked home. A very popular girl called Nicole started walking with me (because no one would throw stones if she was there). I never acknowledged what she did, or said thank you, even though I knew why she was doing it. She would just appear at my side and start walking. Risking her popularity by being seen with me.
I've not seen her in years, but from time to time I would remember what she did.
I just found out Nicole died, a couple of days ago.
I don't know why I'm writing this, except to say I've thought a lot, over the years, about the kids who threw the stones, but I've not given enough thought to Nicole. There are good ppl out there, but they are often lost in a sea of unkindness.
