Rethink on schools urged

An urgent proposal to rethink turning government schools into shelters for expat labourers was presented to Parliament last night, reports the GDN's Mohammed Al A’Ali.

The proposal by the Bahrain Bloc led by Parliament financial and economic affairs committee chairman Ahmed Al Salloom and public utilities and environmental affairs committee chairman Hamad Al Kooheji follows concerns from people across the country that the schools are close to their residences and there are fears that an infected person could spread Covid-19 among them.

"We understand the need to separate expats from the crammed accommodations they are in but it should be towards areas that are far away from the residences," said Mr Al Salloom.

"Residents are worried and there has to be a rethink before large numbers of expat labourers are moved to schools near homes."

The proposal will be debated during tomorrow's session.
