Gulf Air has evacuated a group of Bahrainis from Iran, GDNline's Raji Unnikrishnan reported this afternoon.
The flight landed at Bahrain International Airport this afternoon, announced the Health Ministry.
The flight is part of the government's International Covid-19 Repatriation Programme (ICRP), the evacuation plan for citizens stranded abroad due to the outbreak of virus.
Meanwhile, Gulf Air also announced in a statement that it has successfully returned Bahraini citizens from UAE, Oman, Jordan, Egypt and Turkey.
"Additionally, the ICRP has been safely repatriating citizens from countries with high coronavirus infection rates for over a month," it said.
"Of the locations covered by the ICRP, Iran has seen the largest number of repatriation flights.
"Consequently, Gulf Air has begun operating direct flights to Iran to expedite the safe return of citizens."
It also urged Bahrainis willing to return home to contact the Foreign Ministry or the Embassy of Bahrain at their country of departure to register their details.
The GDN earlier reported that the national carrier currently operates a reduced version of its network with flights to and from London, Paris, Frankfurt and Manila to assist passengers from its global network to get home safely.
Gulf Air is also working closely with the Foreign Ministry, the embassies of Bahrain abroad, the Health Ministry and the BIA to facilitate the travel of Bahrainis.
The national carrier added that it continues to monitor the situation closely with all stakeholders and is working closely with the concerned authorities on taking precautionary measures to ensure the safety and security of the citizens and residents along with its passengers and crew.
