Bahraini restaurateur serves free meals to crisis-hit migrant workers

A BAHRAINI restaurateur has started serving free meals to expatriates without work or pay during the Covid-19 crisis, GDN's Raji Unnikrishnan reports.

Hamad Al Moraisi said the initiative aims to aid migrant workers who helped in “building the nation” and has urged his fellow businessmen and women to follow suit.

In the last five days, the 53-year-old and his team have served nearly 1,000 free meals.

He said Moshy’s Restaurant in East Riffa is open for anyone to pick up a meal of their choice, as the number of people losing their jobs due to the coronavirus outbreak is increasing.

“My aim is to feed those who are without pay or job – no questions asked,” he told the GDN. “They can come and take a meal or two.

“These expat labourers are the ones who helped build this nation and Bahrain is their second home.

“We, as Bahrainis, are their second family and it is now time for us to pay them back.

“I urge all those whom Allah has gifted with enough to share and give – this is a time that people need our help. Some people have offered money but I refused. I have asked them for dry ration and other ingredients.

“We have received a lot of support from the community.”

One of the individuals who have come forward is Indian businessman and community leader Mohammed Malim, who has pledged support to the team.
