Covid-19 Update Bahrain

EXPATRIATES outnumber citizens in the confirmed cases of Covid-19, as the country registered another 119 new cases yesterday, reports the GDN's Raji Unnikrishnan.

Bahrain has so far recorded 3,040 cases of the coronavirus, including 1,532 active cases, 1,500 recoveries and eight deaths.

Of yesterday’s new cases, 109 were among migrant workers, six were contacts of existing cases, one arrived from abroad and the remaining are unspecified.

The Health Ministry said that of the total 1,532 active cases, one remains critical while the rest are in a stable condition.

The ministry also said that another 45 people left treatment and isolation facilities yesterday, taking the total recoveries to 1,500.

The total number of people tested so far in Bahrain has reached 129,694.

The GDN reported this week that almost 68 per cent of Covid-19 cases in Bahrain are expatriate workers.

In an analysis of the virus situation, Labour Market Regulatory Authority chief executive Ausamah Al Absi said that 1,909 Covid-19 cases in Bahrain were expatriate workers as of April 26.

He noted that 95.5pc of these were under legal employers, 1.7pc are flexi permit holders, 1.6pc are on visit visas and the remaining 0.4pc are domestic workers and dependants.

However, in the last four days another 270 cases among expats were recorded, taking the total number of expatriate workers tested positive for Covid-19 to 2,179.

Details of contact tracing for 1,683 cases that have been posted on the Health Ministry’s website dedicated to Covid-19 also show that the majority of cases registered are among expats.

Of the cases detailed on the website for contact tracing, 571 are Bahrainis while the remaining are foreigners.

Among the foreigners are 615 Indians, 236 Bangladeshis, 156 Nepalis, 40 Pakistanis, 16 Saudis, seven Filipinos, five Egyptians, five Sri Lankans, four Britons, four Kuwaitis, three Americans, two Thais, two Spaniards and one each from Lebanon, Jordan, Portugal, Iran, Iraq, Greece, Morocco, Oman, Algeria, Uganda, Ghana, Gambia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, France and Canada.

While among the eight coronavirus deaths registered by Bahrain one is an Indian national and the rest are Bahrainis, all with underlying health conditions.

Bahrain is home to around 600,000 foreigners.
